The Genius Of Burt Bacharach

burt-bacharach-2Earlier this week I drove to Durham, NC where I’ve gone often in the past to visit the Duke Diet & Fitness Center. It’s my week of healthy living, with more weeks to come.

Part of my pilgrimage to Durham consists of driving from our home in Southern New Jersey. It’s approximately 420 miles and, depending when one drives through the Washington DC area, it can be an easy 7 hour drive.

I enjoy long drives (without traffic) as it gives me a chance to listen to my iPod and Sirius XM. Some of my favorite channels are Channel 6 and 7, the 60s and 70s stations. Obviously I am showing my age as I admit this. But many of the songs of my youth are still stuck in my head as shown in my top 20 of all time. During my drive I heard hit after hit, including these great songs:

Close to You—The Carpenters

Wives & Lovers—Jack Jones

Walk on By—Dionne Warwick

What the World Needs Now Is Love—Jackie DeShannon

The Look of Love—Dusty Springfield

Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head—B.J. Thomas

One Less Bell to Answer—5th Dimension

This Guy’s In Love With You—Herb Alpert

What I’ve realized is that everyone one of these songs was written by Burt Bacharach, a true musical genius. Bacharach is now 86 but his talents are immense having written 76 top 40 songs, the majority of them with the late Hal David.

There is something special about a Bacharach song that touches my heart. A distinctive trumpet and the words of Hal David made these tunes and many others, the classics that stand the test of time.

Thanks for making my drive to Durham so enjoyable Burt.
